The Doctor of Theology (Th.D.) is a doctoral research degree. It is equivalent to a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) but specifically focused in an area of religious study. Although the Ph.D. is much more common, there are several seminaries with TH.D. degrees and these degrees are just as respected.
Most accredited Th.D. programs don’t include a masters degree. Usually, students must complete a separate masters program at a seminary, theology school or divinity school before enrolling in a Th.D. degree program.
Students who complete Th.D. degrees go onto teach at seminaries and similar institutions, pursue careers in writing and research, or work as lay or ordained leaders. After finishing their program, they’ve earned the distinction “doctor.”
