The Master of Theological Studies and Juris Doctor (M.T.S. and J.D.) is a combined degree program that complements the seminary study of an M.T.S. with the legal coursework of a J.D. The M.T.S. component may have a broad Christian focus or a specialized area of study. The J.D. part meets the requirements of a Juris Doctor degree.
Most accredited M.T.S. and J.D. degree programs require entering students to have a bachelor degree, although the bachelor degree doesn’t necessarily need to be in a theological or pre-law subject. Programs may also ask applicants to take the LSAT.
Students may pursue this type of degree to supplement a legal education with theological training, as preparation for working in the Christian nonprofit sector or for other explicitly Christian legal work.
