A master’s of divinity is awarded as a professional degree for Christian leaders. This master’s-level degree is given to anyone who completes the required coursework at a seminary, but it is usually pursued by pastors, missionaries and parachurch leaders. As a professional degree, M.Div. programs include the academic studies required for a master’s of arts in religion (M.A.R.) or a master’s of theological studies (M.T.S.). However, the M.Div. often includes more academically-oriented coursework, as well as a practical component.
M.Div. degrees have become standard requirements for many pastors and missionaries, but seminaries understand not everyone can attend a traditional seminary for three or four years. Therefore, seminaries offer ways to earn an M.Div. online, through modular classes or at regional campuses. In the list of schools below, there are seminaries that offer M.Div. degrees through all these settings.
- Church Divinity School of the Pacific
- Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary
- Fuller Theological Seminary
(M.Div.; Spanish M.Div. with a concentration in either pastoral care and counseling or multicultural ministries)
